Defintion of Terms:
  • Ex-works: Is where the consignee pays for all the charges from the pick up to the final delivery
  • FCA: Free Carrier, is where the shipper pays for the pick up/delivery to a nominated destination and the consignee pays for the rest of the charges.
  • FAS: Free alongside carrier requires the seller to deliver goods to a named port alongside a vessel designated by the buyer. "Alongside" means that the goods are within reach of a ship's lifting equipment.
  • FOB: Free on board, Is where the shipper pays for all the charges up to the load port, after that the consignee pays for the Ocean/Air Freight to the final delivery address.
  • CFR: Cost & freight, Is where is the shipper pays for all the charges from pick up to the Ocean Freight and provide the buyer with the documents necessary to obtain the goods from the carrier. After that the consignee pays for the charges from the port of discharge to the final delivery.
  • CIF: Cost, Insurance & Freight, is where the shipper pays for all the charges from the pick up to the Ocean Freight. It also includes the cost of insuring the goods while it is in transit against damage.
  • CPT: Carriage Paid to, means the seller pays the freight for the carriage of the goods to the named destination, including the clearing of goods
  • CIP: Carriage & Insruance Paid to, means the seller pays the freight for the carriage of the goods to the named destination, including the insurance of the goods.
  • DES: Delivered Ex-Ship, is a trade term requiring the seller to deliver goods to a buyer at an agreed port of arrival. The seller remains responsible for the goods until they are delivered.
  • DDU: Delivery duty unpaid, Is where Shipper pays for all the charges from Pick up to Final Delivery (except for Duty/Taxes) that is paid be the consignee.
  • DDP: Deliver duty paid, Is where the shipper pays for everything from the pick up to the final delivery (including Duty and Taxes).
